Event Details
In collaboration with CrisisCommons, CrisisCamp Sydney and the University of New South Wales, CrisisCamp Toronto is pitching in to help support Sydney with their Camp for Pakistan on September 3rd (Toronto Time).
Where? University of Toronto, TBD
When? 18:00 EST until we hand off to Sydney
Skills? Data Entry, Social Media Enthusiasts, CrisisCamp Passionate Volunteers and anyone with a technical arm who wants to lend a hand!
Stay tuned for updates on the Location of the Event! And if you have any questions email crisiscampto@gmail.com
Here's an intro into what CrisisCamp Sydney will be working on:
In late July 2010 after an unusually wet
monsoon across South Asia, Pakistan suffered from floods affecting
nearly a third of the country. UNOCHA has described the Pakistan Floods
as a disaster surpassing the Boxing day Tsunami, 2005 Pakistan
Earthquake and Haiti January 2010 Earthquake combined in terms of the number of people affected and the social and economic destruction caused.
Pakistan
was already suffering socially and economically from the effects of the
conflict in the region. Without help, this disaster could have untold
long-term consequences for the future of the most vulnerable in
Pakistan.
OpenstreetMap
(OSM) is a 5 year old project with the aim to create and provide online
geographic data like street maps under an open license for anyone to
use. The data is created by volunteers from all over the world, so that
programmers, scientists, social workers, cartographers and the like can
use it to build services without being restricted by licenses or terms
of services of commercial geo-data providers.
The
HOT is a relatively new team of the OSM, incorporated as a non-profit
in the US with the broad aim of being the connection point between the
humanitarian and open mapping communities. It comes together and offers
remote data creation during crisis just like the one facing Pakistan
currently.
Previously,
the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Community contributed an enormous amount
of actionable information immediiatly after the January 2010 Haiti
Earthquake. This data was and continues to be used in everything from
running search and rescue missions to identifying IDPs at risk of
flooding, to the rebuilding effort.
To assist in the relief efforts the Sydney team
are organising a CrisisCamp in Sydney Australia on 4-5 September where
volunteers can come together to tackle specific mapping tasks using
OpenStreetMap tools.
These include:
* adding towns to the OSM database using satellite imagery
* updating existing data in cooporation with Pakistani expatriat community
* establishing and documenting a process for adding flood relief related data to OSM
* establishing a process to export data for first responders
* incorporating OSM data with other platforms including UNOCHA's humanitarian data model
* wiki gardening to keep the information for mappers clear and succinct
